Dune: Part Two Review

Dune: Part Two

Shortly after watching the first part of this trilogy, I began the next installment, Dune: Part Two. Simply put, I had a great time. Directed by the same master as the first, Denis Villeneuve, this film brought the intensity to a much higher level. While the first film was more about introducing the Great Houses, the Atreides, and Paul as heir to the throne, this one is all about adding fuel to the fire.

The first half of the film, I’d say, is all about Paul and Jessica settling into their new roles with the Fremen. Jessica is faced with vital, irreversible decisions as a Bene Gesserit — choices that carry weight not just for her and Paul, but for the rest of the Fremen too. Paul, meanwhile, wrestles with whispers of becoming the Mahdi, or as they call it, the Lisan al-Gaib, all while navigating a mother whose moves he doesn’t always agree with, and a Chani who’s beginning to question his commitment and true purpose.

The second film is far more intense and combustible than the first. The stakes are higher than ever — you can feel something bigger building throughout, something so massive it eventually spirals into uncontrollable chaos.

The returning cast delivered as expected. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and more all devoured their roles and did the script justice. But the newcomers are just as riveting. Christopher Walken and Florence Pugh, playing the Emperor and his daughter Princess Irulan, were elegant and enchanting as a pair sitting atop the highest throne. Still, the one who stole the show was Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, the Baron’s nephew — he brought such fierceness and intensity that you feel almost hypnotized whenever he graces the screen.

As for the rest — scoring, cinematography, production design — I had no complaints. Hans Zimmer’s score was as strong and emotional as ever. The cinematography was flawless, and the production design felt meticulously thought out. It was a true feast for the eyes, making the wait for the third and final installment even more exhilarating — because, as we now know, it’s leading into the biggest war we’ve seen yet.
