Steven Spielberg is Back With Another Hit, But It Wasn’t a Home Run

Four years since the last film he directed, The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg is back again with another sci-fi hit that just hit theatres last week. Disclosure Day is an intense and intriguing film about a character named Dr. Daniel Kellner, who is on a mission to reveal — or in this case, disclose — the biggest secret that humanity has ever had to endure. Spooky and mysterious, this film is one of the most anticipated films of the year, making it impossible to contain the high expectations placed on this blockbuster.

Led by acting powerhouses such as Emily Blunt as a meteorologist, Margaret Fairchild, and Josh O’Connor alongside her as Daniel Kellner, complemented by other stars like Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, and more, the performances from this ensemble should be the last thing you worry about.

This film marks the 30th collaboration between Spielberg and composer John Williams, while cinematographer Janusz Kamiński also returns as a longtime collaborator. Since working together for the first time on Schindler’s List (1993), Spielberg and Kamiński’s partnership is still as outstanding as ever, keeping you on your toes and glued to the screen throughout the entire film. And there’s no doubt that Williams’s scoring mastery is also one of the key factors in the fascination of following along on the high-stakes journey of Kellner and Fairchild.

The story, on the other hand, with a screenplay by David Koepp and story by Spielberg himself, isn’t up there with some of the best films he’s directed, such as Jaws, Catch Me If You Can, or E.T. In my opinion, the film didn’t leave me with any strong feelings or emotions by the end. In fact, it’s one of those cases where the build-up is much more interesting than the ending. I could absolutely have watched this film for another half hour or so, as I feel it could have ended in a smoother, more complete way.

In the end, I do think it’s still a pretty solid film, with an all-star cast and a highly captivating plot. Despite not being the best Spielberg film, it is still very much worth the watch.
